Artisanal Mining is legal in many countries but the definition of "artisanal" in this sense means the industry is largely unregulated and susceptible to dangerous working conditions and forms of abuse.
Fable Studio worked with Synergy Global's French office to develop training material for members of IMPACT – an independent non-profit collaborating with local partners and working with communities, to educate them about the health risks, the environmental impact and their basic human rights in these conditions.
The collateral needed to surpass language or literacy so that the miners themselves would be able to identify the risks, reflect on their own conditions and understand their rights and the help available to them.
A number of scenarios were illustrated as posters and booklets, which were distributed on site or in neighbouring settlement and villages, as well as a presentation and video for active engagement with the miners and their families.
